Howard M. Layton trained at the J. Arthur Rank School of acting and spent about five years on the stage and playing small parts in films. He stood in for Robert Taylor in 'Conspirator' when Taylor had to return to the USA without completing his role. Taylor managed to do all the close-ups and the scenes with Elizabeth Taylor, but for the longer shots the studio used Howard Layton.  Layton was also an engineer and aviator, having flown in the RAF during WWII, and later became an author.
