Billy Wells

Born: 31 August 1889, Stepney, London, England, UK
Died: 11 June 1967, Ealing, London, England, UK

Billy Wells was a former British heavyweight boxing champion who fought as 'Bombardier' Billy Wells after his promotion in the army to the respective rank. He bought himself out of the army to box professionally, but re-enlisted during World War 1 in May 1915 whilst continuing with his boxing career. He starred in a few British silent films in the 1910s and 1920s often as a boxer or heavyweight hero. After his professional boxing career was over, Wells began appearing as an uncredited extra in sound films right into the 1960s shortly before his death. He could be seen at the beginning of Rank Organisation films hitting the gong from 1935 to 1945.
