She was once under contract with 20th Century Fox and was considered for the title role in the long-running 'Blondie' series of films, produced by Columbia Pictures, a role that eventually went to Penny Singleton. During the 1940s, most of her work was in radio and on stage. Shirley was also a singer who occasionally guested as vocalist with swing bands.
