Started out in films in 1919 as a bit part player. He also worked behind the scenes to ensure his longevity in the business. By the end of the silent era, Brophy secured slightly bigger parts, working with the likes of Buster Keaton and Wallace Beery. He even directed a couple of foreign language Buster Keaton features. In the mid 1930s Brophy concentrated his efforts solely on acting and with his short stature and bald looks he featured in many comedies of the time.
