Peter Vaughan

Born: 4 April 1923, Wem, Shropshire, England
Died: 6 December 2016, Mannings Heath, West Sussex, England, UK

Naturally gifted character actor who is as comfortable playing villains as he is gentlemen.  He started out as a stage actor, eventually appearing in repertory in Wolverhampton and Birmingham. Vaughan did not appear in films until the mid 1950s. He has acted alongside the biggest names in the business including Burt Lancaster, Frank Sinatra, Sean Connery and Anthony Hopkins. He was just as comfortable acting on television series like 'Our Friends in the North', for which he won a Bafta, or in sitcoms like Porridge and Citizen Smith.

Smokescreen (1964) as Roper

This is one of his lesser known films in which he stars, playing a seemingly tight-fisted insurance investigator. A better script than its status suggests and a wonderful performance from Peter.

Haunted Honeymoon (1986) as Francis Abbot Sr.

Peter Vaughan is on the right, with Paul L. Smith.

The Secret Agent (1996) as The Driver

The Crucible (1996) as Giles Corey

The Life and Death of Peter Sellers (2004) as Bill Sellers
