She always seemed to play uptight, aloof characters, but what was her character really like? Why, when she had an attractive enough face and very fine bone structure, did she play plain 'pinned up hair' characters? All these questions puzzle me, and I'll probably never know the answers.
There's a lovely moment in the Hancock's Half Hour episode 'The Train Journey' in which pehaps a little of who she really was comes out.
She plays her usual style character, trapped on a train journey with a very bored Hnacock who keeps tryig to come up with ways to pass the time, much to the annoyance of everyone else. At the end, they all find themselves on the return journey (on the bus, this time). Hancock tries to get them all to sing Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, standing up to conduct. She keeps herself bolt upright, looking forward, then moves her eyes only hard left to see what's going on, then finally, smiles, relaxes and joins in. I love that moment.
